Your home should work for you, your family and the way you live. Sometimes a new custom home isn’t the answer yet. When you need to maximize the space in your current home, find clever ways to make your space more usable by maximizing storage in unique ways.

Platforms add additional space and a new visual element.

A great way to maximize storage is by using previously unused space. Adding a platform in a bedroom, guest room, or craft/play room allows for a lot of extra storage without the clutter. Drawers can be added in the front of the platform for items used regularly and different hinged panels can be added to the top of the platform to utilize the space between the drawers and the wall. You may have to move a bed over to access the hinged doors, but how often do you need to get to your Christmas decorations or off season clothing?

Use the space under stairs.

If you are making the most of every square inch of your home, one place to not overlook is the space underneath the stairs. This is an area with a lot of flexibility.
Does your family have a lot of shoes? Put drawers underneath the steps that have shoe racks.
Do you have a furry member of the family who needs his own space? Adding a doggy door allows your pet to get some quiet time when needed. And there is potentially room for his kennel, bed, toys, and food. Make sure to add an access door big enough to get into the space for cleaning, feeding, etc. Are you a wine connoisseur? Add an elegant wine rack or cellar. It is a great way to show off your collection and keep it easily accessible. If you are a book lover, under the stairs is a great place to add shelving or a reading nook to curl up with a good read! Honestly, the possibilities are endless for the space under the stairs. Finding storage in the kitchen

The kitchen is one place that can always use more storage and typically has nooks and crannies that can be adjusted. Adding drawers and/or cabinets to previously unused spaces can make a big difference. Baseboard drawers can be a great way to free up some cabinet space as can corner drawers and shelving. The kitchen island can have many purposes including storage for pots and pans, a wine rack, a book shelf – make sure to use all sides of the island to get the most effective use of space.
This kitchen by J. Thompson Builders is a great example of getting all the storage possible from your kitchen island! The built-in cabinets allow for safe storage of glassware while also showcasing the beautiful pieces.
Think about how your home is currently used, how it will be used in the coming years, and what you would love to change. When hiring someone to help design and remodel your home, it is important to know how you want your home to work for you. It is possible to have a beautiful, functional home you love.
