Curb appeal improvements should play second fiddle to structural aspects. Each year homeowners should evaluate the condition of all major exterior components. Examine your home carefully to determine what repairs are needed or what improvements you would like to make. Professional contractors are invaluable in helping you plan. They can outline your options and discuss what improvements you can make within your budget.
Here are some of the major areas to evaluate to get you started:
  1. Examine the roof. Look for broken or missing shingles, or other obvious problems such as shingles moving with the wind.
  2. Inspect gutters. Look for loose straps or clips. Clear any clogs by flushing the gutters with a hose. Position downspouts so the water is directed at least three feet away from the foundation to prevent structural damage.
  3. Service the central air-conditioning unit. Follow your manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations. Replace the filter. Clean dirt and debris from the coils.
  4. Assess windows. They should operate smoothly, be condensation-free between the panes and you should feel no air leaking in around them. While inspecting the windows, wash them inside and out with a solution of ammonia and water, or another window cleaning product.
  5. Check out the siding. Pressure wash siding to remove dirt build-up. Look for buckling or other damage which may indicate the siding requires repair.
  6. Look at exterior doors. You shouldn’t see light around the door or feel air movement. The door should easily close and lock. Otherwise, if any of these conditions exist, the door may be warped and it’s time to replace it.
Many homeowners can handle small home maintenance tasks, but it’s recommended to at least consult with a remodeling professional for larger jobs, particularly if it involves majorly changing the structure.
