Homes in colder climates generally are built with water pipes installed inside of the insulation to protect them from freezing temperatures. But holes in the building including areas where cable and telephone lines enter, coupled with extreme cold can still result in frozen pipes. Those pipes more likely to encounter cold air include outdoor spigots, water sprinkler lines, swimming pool lines and supply lines in unheated areas such as basements and attics. As water freezes, it expands. The pipe can not withstand the pressure and bursts, often resulting in serious damage to furnishings and building materials.
