The kids have left the nest and you have extra space. Your desires and needs are evolving and the space and design of your home may no longer work with your new family dynamics. Consider the resale value of any projects and your plans for the future, especially if they include downsizing, but now is the perfect time to invest money in reshaping your house to fit your current situation.
So wipe away the tears and start tearing out walls. Evolving your home may even make your new lifestyle transition smoother.
Master Guest Suite:Make an unused bedroom into a luxury guest suite with a built-in flat-screen television, accent lighting, storage built-ins, a spa-themed bathroom and a wet bar.
Functional Room:Remodel an unused bedroom into your own personal retreat. Some ideas include making the room into a reading room or a yoga studio with a waterfall wall and a stereo system for playing relaxing music, convert it into an art room complete with easels and a potter’s wheel, a game room – perfect for entertaining and for future grandchildren, or a hobby room where you can scrapbook, sew, or build.
Home Office:Change the bedroom into a well-organized home office with lots of built-in storage features for files, supplies, a computer and other equipment.
Multifunctional Room:Modify the bedroom into a combination office and guest room. Incorporate built-in storage, a desk and office equipment with a sleeper sofa and bedside table.
Storage:Turn the bedroom into a large walk-in closet, particularly appropriate if the room adjoins the master bedroom. Extra storage space is not only useful for clothing, but for any unused equipment, hobby items or memorabilia.
Theater Room:Transform the bedroom into a separate theater room complete with 3D flat-screen television, state-of-the-art sound system, recliners and popcorn machine with a mini-fridge for storing drinks.
Kitchen Spaces:Add an office area, extra storage or a hobby area, such as a sewing space, to your kitchen. Expand your area for entertaining. Add accent/recessed lighting to a kitchen island or formal dining room. Invest in new comfortable built-in upholstered seating. Install a kitchen island or wet bar.
Basement Space:Focus on the one room that often gets finished last. Convert it into a “mancave
